Translating Developmental Psychology

In 2018, I was commissioned by Tziolas Publications to translate the academic textbook titled "An Introduction to Developmental Psychology” (3rd edition) by Alan Slater and Gavin Bremner. The scientific editor was Ms. V. Tsourtou, Assistant Professor of Developmental Psychology at the University of Crete.

It is a valuable 800 page textbook providing an extensive introduction to developmental psychology and covering a wide range of topics concerning human development from infancy to puberty.

Basic topics:

  1. Cognitive Development:
    • It presents the basic theory of cognitive development, such as Piaget's theory of the stages of Cognitive Development as well as contemporary expansion of this theory.
    • It also discusses Vygotsky's theory about cognitive development and the role of cultural and social interaction in learning.
  2. Linguistic Development:
    • This investigates how children acquire and develop linguistic and communicative skills in their first language and the effect of the environment and biology.
    • Other theories of linguistic development presented are Noam Chomsky's ‘Generative Grammar’ Theory and the theories of social learning.
  3. Social and Affective Development:
    • This analyses the processes through which children develop social relations, emotional modulation and recognising others’ feelings.
    • Furthermore, other topics cover theories of attachment/bonding, as well as the ways in which family, friends and the school environment affect social development.
  4. Physical Growth and Development:
    • Physical growth in childhood is analysed, including the developmental stages of the brain and the nervous system.
    • Reference is also made to physical development during puberty and how this affects the psychological status and behaviour of young adolescents.
  5. Developmental Disorders:
    • Various developmental disorders are examined, such as Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD), Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), as well as Dyslexia.
    • Theories attempting to explain the origins of these disorders are also presented, including current intervention strategies.

Purpose and Structure:

The main purpose of the textbook is to provide readers with a wide and comprehensive understanding of developmental psychology. Every chapter includes a critical evaluation of main theories and research findings and presents everyday life examples to help readers understand how the principles of developmental psychology are applied in practice. The textbook structure makes it easily accessible to both students and professionals in the fields of psychology and education; it provides clear and detailed explanations as well as questions to be discussed and activities to enhance understanding of the topics at hand.

The 3rd edition of the textbook is still an important source of knowledge in the field of developmental psychology, updated with the inclusion of recent research and theories. This is a ‘must-have’ textbook for those interested in understanding human development and applying this knowledge in practice.
